I am fascinated by wildlife and the great outdoors. Most of my work is done out in the field.

Attempting to find the essence of my subject, I work to express its meaning and nature with minimal lines or strokes. This will often come after an extended period of looking as I learn about my subject through observation.

With wildlife I enjoy the adrenaline of movement and uniqueness of moment so that the fleeting qualities of a sighting are conveyed in the artwork. With landscape, I relax to allow the contours and shapes to flow into the painting more slowly.

It is my relationship with a place, and with the people that work and live there, that is most important to me so I take only the simplest tools with me around the world.

I love to travel and paint, and I also love to teach others how to tackle the most exciting of subjects.

I carry watercolours, paper, brushes and a water pot and try to settle into a landscape to observe it and to participate in it through drawing and painting.

I have been lucky enough to paint in far-flung places including Antarctica, the Arctic, India, Mongolia, South East Asia as well as the Galapagos and Papua New Guinea though I spent most of my time between Africa and the UK. I’m happy to be completely at home in Malawi, Zambia and Namibia and have led many safaris across southern Africa.
